陸先生讓藺燕梅坐下來玩一家。她想：孟勤今天太沉默了。便讓他玩。顧先生說：燕梅，還是你吧。兩個先生，兩位小姐。

讓孟勤幫你的忙。趙先生說。於是她無可如何，只有坐下。余孟勤便坐在她旁邊。顧太太坐在顧先生椅子的扶手上。
藺燕梅他們連著輸了一個雙局。全是輸在余孟勤的辦法上。趙先生笑了說：燕梅自己當家打一次看看！我記得史宣文是打得好極了，你們同了一年屋，也許有些真傳。余孟勤笑了，走到趙先生後面說：我在這兒看牌吧。讓我去看燕梅的牌，我忍不住要管閒事！
牌風也奇怪。藺燕梅在余孟勤走開之後，得心應手，偏打正著。把輸了的分數全贏回來了。
這幸虧是燕梅老實。余孟勤看了說：若是換了個愛說俏皮話的，我非慘了不可！

燕梅還不也是憑運氣！余孟勤笑著說．
你再說！她說著，又勝了一局。
她這是凌希慧、史宣文的作風。趙先生說：一邊跟人說話一邊贏牌！燕梅。你跟她們常有信麼？
常有。史宣文的信還多些。她說：可是我總是太忙，不能寫長信給她。
史宣文是個人材。趙先生說：能常和她通信是好的。她才被重慶那邊聘走，金先生又想把她聘回來了。說不定明年還要回來大家見面。
藺燕梅聽了心上喜歡。奇怪自己怎麼不知道這消息呢？再一算，有三四個星期，沒有回史宣文的信了。心上很是歉然。一想：索性給她個驚奇，我放棄了姐姐，放棄了史宣文，等到從余孟勤的鞭策底下磨煉出來之後再見她們。又想：先只寫些平常問候的信給她，從前那種儘是書名兒的信少寫。
這天晚上他們到差不多九點才散。有趙先生陪了一起回來。余孟勤在路上便不曾再給藺燕梅加上什麼功課。她回到屋裏很像得到例外一個假日似的十分高興。
這個學期大家有一種風氣，就是一律拼命用功，拼死命用功。最大的原因是因為學校搬到昆明之後到了今年已經是第三年了。一切都上了軌道，課程加緊了些。第二個原因是生活壓迫得太厲害，學生，教授全是苟延殘喘地活著。大家無力作課外活動，只有把所有的精神體力不管死活地擲向書本。這時的讀書空氣雖濃，興致卻是沉悶得很。這種情形有點像舊時私塾房裏的孩子用大聲的誦讀來抵抗外邊過新娘子花轎的鑼鼓似的。因為這時正當滇緬路的極盛時代，彷彿從昆明往西走便是遍地黃金的所在。只要肯去那邊深山外彎一彎腰，回來便可以成巨富。自己有了錢，正不怕把昆明物價提得高些，叫那些傻子們多吃一點苦頭。這一年來也許又有許多人走了宋捷軍的路子而忘了自己的使命同來歷。痰迷了心竅，他們已看不出另外一批批的同學受了政府密令，悄悄離開學校穿了軍裝，也往西走是為的什麼。他們只覺得天空上自從多了一種鯊魚式的驅逐機後，空襲減少了。
這些事情含有什麼意義，他們無暇思索，他們只是拼命地玩，拼命地享樂，硬用金錢奢侈品把這個古樸的昆明城改造成了個暴發戶的樣子！那麼城西北角的拉丁區呢？那裏是一九四一年的新道奇，福特德盧克斯，雪佛蘭，順風牌刁梯蓓克的喇叭所唱不到的石板街道。那裏是由翠湖的小橋流水，玉龍堆的花牆瓦屋隔離了的無車馬聲的靜雅學生區域。學生們在那裏作什麼呢？可憐，他們便提高了喉嚨念書。用自己的嗓音阻塞自己的耳朵。他們是不怕空襲的。有了空襲時，他們說：炸吧！我們這個病人，病根深得很，戰爭的醫生，多用些虎狼之劑罷！
