Chapter 13 Dark & Starlight
Holding the admission ticket in your hand, you follow a long line of people into the circus, watching the rhythmic movement of the black and white clock while waiting.
Beyond the ticket booth, the only entrance is a heavy striped curtain. The audience walked in one by one and disappeared.
When it's your turn, you lift the curtain and step forward, only to be engulfed in the darkness behind the closed curtain.
It takes a moment for your eyes to adjust to the darkness, and then countless tiny dots of starlight emerge and line the wall in front of you.
Not so long ago you were with a bunch of fellow circus fans, close enough to touch them, but now you're alone, groping your way along a maze of passages.
The passage turns left and right, and the only lighting is those small bright spots. You have no way of guessing how far you have traveled, or which direction it will lead.
Finally, you reach another curtain. It is as soft as velvet, a curtain that can be easily opened as soon as your hands touch it.
The other end of the curtain was blindingly bright.
