the moon and sixpence 毛姆 1121Words 2023-02-05
The raucous social season is drawing to a close, and everyone I know is busy getting out of town.Mrs. Strickland planned to take the family to the Norfolk seafront, where the children could swim in the sea and the husband could play golf.We said goodbye and agreed to meet again in the fall. But on the last day of my stay in London, just coming out of the Army and Navy store, I met Mrs. Strickland with her son and daughter; London sold out the last batch of things before. We are both hot and tired, and I propose to go to the park together for a cold drink. I suppose Mrs. Strickland was delighted to have me see her two children, and she accepted my invitation without the slightest hesitation. The kids are even more adorable than they look in the photos and she's justifiably proud of them.I am also very young, so they are not restrained at all in front of me, they just talk about their own affairs happily. Both children were very beautiful, healthy and lively.Everyone felt very happy while resting in the shade.

An hour later the family piled into a carriage and drove home, and I strolled idly by myself to the club.I may feel a little lonely, and I look back with envy on the happy family life I have just glimpsed. The family seems to have a very harmonious relationship. They told little jokes that no outsider could understand, and laughed like hell.If a person's intelligence is measured purely from the perspective of being good at rhetoric, maybe Charles.Strickland was not clever, but in his own environment, his wisdom was more than sufficient, which was not only a stepping stone to success in career, but also a guarantee of happiness in life.Mrs. Strickland was a charming woman who loved her husband very much.I imagined that the life of this couple would not be disturbed by any misfortunes and disasters. They were honest and decent, and their two children were even more well-behaved and cute. They would definitely inherit and carry forward the status and traditions of this family.Unknowingly, the two of them are getting older and older, but their children are growing up. When they reach a certain age, they will get married and start a family. An imposing man, obviously going to be a soldier. In the end, the couple retired, loved by their children and grandchildren, and lived a prosperous and decent old age.Their happy life was not in vain, and they didn't bid farewell to the world until they were very old.

This must be the story of countless couples in the world. This mode of living gives people a sense of serenity and intimacy. It conjures the image of a placid brook, winding its way through lush green pastures and shaded by lush trees, until at last it empties into the misty sea.But the sea is always so calm, so silent, so still, that you suddenly feel a vague uneasiness.Perhaps it is only a queer notion of mine (and it haunted me even in those days), and I always feel that something is missing from the way most people go through their lives.I recognize the social value of this life, and I see its well-ordered happiness, but there is a strong desire in my blood for a wilder journey. There seemed to be something about this peaceful and peaceful happiness that terrified me.My heart yearns for a more adventurous life.As long as there are vicissitudes and unforeseen thrills in my life, I am ready to tread rocky cliffs and reef-strewn beaches.
