Chapter 1 Mr know-it-all

Mr know-it-all one I kind of disliked Kailanda even before I met him. World War I had just ended, and the trans-Pacific route was so busy that it was hard to book cabins.I was happy to get a double cabin, but when I heard the name of the companion, I was a little discouraged.Kelanda, this makes me feel like I'm in a suffocating room.Thinking of sharing a room with this Kailanda during my fourteen-day journey (from San Francisco to Yokohama) made me uncomfortable.I hate his name, if only he was called Smith or Brown or something. After boarding the ship, I went to the cabin and found that Kailanda had already arrived.A large, ugly trunk and a heavily labeled suitcase lay under his bed, his perfume, shampoo, and pomade stood on the washstand, and his sandalwood toothbrush was stamped in gilt. His initials.

I don't like Kailanda. In the smoking room, I ordered a deck of solitaire and was about to start when a man came up to say hello to me. I am Kailanda. He sat down in front of me, smiling and showing a row of white teeth. Oh, we seem to be living in the same room. I am glad to hear that you are British.Meeting one's compatriots abroad is indeed exciting. you are British? Of course, I'm an Englishman through and through. Then he took out his passport and handed it to me. Want something to drink?he asked. I wondered.Prohibition is underway in America, and there's not a drop to be found on board, but Kelanda smiled slyly at me.

Whiskey, soda or cocktails, you just say it.As he spoke, he took out two bottles from his back pocket and placed them on the table in front of me. I got excited and asked the waiter for two glasses and some ice cubes. Yes, Not Bad.I said. Yes, I still have a lot of this wine here. If you have any friends on board, you can call them all. I didn't say anything. Then he told me about New York, San Francisco, theatre, painting and politics. He was very talkative, and for a long time he was alone there talking endlessly. I got a little bored and picked up my cards again. Do you like card tricks?

dislike.I'm starting to hate him again. I'll show you a show.He drew three cards and handed them to me.But I ignored him and said I was going to find a seat in the restaurant. Oh great, I've reserved seats for both of us, I think we should sit together. I don't like Kailanda. Not only did he live in the same room as me, but he also insisted on eating at the same table as me for three meals a day.No matter where I am, I cannot get rid of him.If it was in my house, I would have slammed the door in front of him to show him that I was not welcome. Kailanda is good at socializing, and on the third day on the ship, she got to know almost everyone. He does everything: preside over auctions, raise sports funds, organize golf tournaments, arrange concerts, throw masquerade balls.I think everyone must hate him a little bit.We all called him Mr. Jack of All Trades, even in front of him.He didn't care about it and took it as a compliment from us.

two Kailanda is very talkative and loves to argue with others, especially at mealtimes. We couldn't bear it, but couldn't make him stop.He seems to know more than anyone else, and mistakes don't seem to happen to him. When he spoke, if anyone opposed him, he would argue with him endlessly. He will never drop a topic, no matter how unimportant, before convincing you. We sat at the doctor's table one evening, and Kelanda was still talking, as usual. Also present were Ramsey and his wife, who work at the US consulate in Kobe. Ramsay was a solid fellow, with taut skin and a slightly fat stomach that made the clothes bulge. This time he returned to Kobe with his wife. His wife had been alone in New York for a year.Mrs Ramsay looked very lovely.Although her husband's salary was not very high, and she was dressed very simply, she knew how to wear her clothes, which made her more charming than ordinary women. This is a kind of dignified and quiet beauty.

It can be seen that Ramsay hates Kailanda very much. From time to time they argued, and the arguments were long and violent. At this time, the topic talked about the artificial cultured pearls being carried out by the smart Japanese.Kelanda told us a lot about pearls.I'm sure Ramsay doesn't know much about it, but he never misses an opportunity to refute Kailanda. In a short while, we were involved in a quarrel full of gunpowder. In the beginning, Kailanda was still very emotional and chattering, but before long, he himself got a little bored. At last, apparently stung by Ramsay's words, he rapped on the table and cried:

I can tell you that I am the most vocal in this regard.I came to Japan this time to discuss the pearl business. There is no one in the trade who does not think that what I have just said is absolutely true.He looked around triumphantly. I know the price of all pearls, and there is no pearl whose value I cannot immediately recognize. He pointed to the necklace Mrs. Ramsay was wearing. Ma'am, your pearl necklace is very valuable, and its price is still going up. Mrs Ramsay blushed as she tucked the necklace lightly into her dress. Do you say this is a natural pearl?Ramsay seems to have caught something about Kelanda.

Yes, this pearl is very delicate.Keranda replied. good.Although I didn't buy it, I was wondering, how much do you think it's worth? It costs 15,000 U.S. dollars in the general market, but it can be bought for 13,000 U.S. dollars on the most prosperous Fifth Street in the United States.Ramsay sneered. My wife bought it at a department store before she left New York for eighteen dollars. Kailanda's face flushed red all of a sudden. Nonsense, this pearl is not only real, but it is the best of several that I know of. Can you bet?I'll bet you a hundred dollars it's a knockoff.Ramsay urged.

Can. No, Ramsay, how can you bet on a fact?Mrs Ramsay discouraged. why not?It would be a fool to pass up such an opportunity of easy money. But you can't prove it's an imitation? Show it to me and I'll know if it's true or not.Kailanda said. Show it to this gentleman, my dear. Mrs. Ramsay hesitated, clasping her hands together as though she were considering something. Ramsay got impatient with waiting, he came over and took off the necklace with his own hands, and handed it to Kailanda. I had a premonition that something unfortunate was about to happen. Kailanda took out a magnifying glass and observed it carefully. After a while, a triumphant smile flashed across his face. When he handed the necklace to Ramsay and was about to speak, he saw Mrs. Ramsay's face so pale that she was about to faint. Her eyes were on Kailanda, a desperate pleading.I'm surprised Ramsay didn't see this.

Kailanda opened her mouth halfway, and remained silent for a long time.I could see that he was trying to change something. I was wrong, and finally he said, It's a very good imitation, eighteen dollars is just right. He took a hundred dollars from his wallet and handed it to Ramsay without another word. Maybe this will teach you not to be so self-righteous in the future.Ramsay was triumphant. I noticed that Kailanda's hands were shaking. The story quickly spread throughout the ship, and Kailanda had to endure teasing and ridicule from others. To Mr. Know-it-All, it was a real joke. However, Mrs Ramsay never came out again and she is said to have suffered from a headache.

three The next morning, while I was shaving, Kailanda lay in bed smoking a cigar.Suddenly there was a beeping sound, and a letter was stuffed in from under the door.I opened the door and there was no one outside.I picked up the envelope, and it was written to Kailanda in printed letters. I handed him the letter and asked: Where did it come from? He opened the envelope.oh?Instead of a letter, it was a hundred-dollar bill. He took one look at me, then tore the envelope to pieces and threw it through the hatch. No one wants to be seen as a fool.He said. Is that pearl real?I asked. If I had a beautiful wife, I would never leave her alone in New York for a year.He took out his wallet and put a hundred dollars in it. At this time, I feel that I don't dislike Kailanda so much.
