Chapter 36 Question ○3○

Why are waiters paid more than sous chefs in fancy restaurants? (Leslie Wiles) In a high-end restaurant, a waiter can earn hundreds of dollars a night in tips, while an assistant chef in the same restaurant can earn only a few dozen dollars. Both jobs are important to a restaurant's success, but most would agree that it often takes far more experience, talent, and training to be a good sous chef than it is to be a good waiter. So why do waiters earn so much more? In addition to the necessary skills, the income of a particular job depends on many other factors. Many skilled jobs pay relatively low wages because they are a stepping stone to the job you want.A sous-chef job falls into this category, but a waiter does not.

Skilled people are willing to accept lower wages for sous chef jobs because the position provides the necessary training and experience to become a chef.Chef, on the other hand, is a respected and well-paid profession. Conversely, waiter is the ultimate job.Quite a few waiters never made it to better-paying jobs, and even when some did, their success had nothing to do with having been a waiter in the past.
