Chapter 43 Question ○37

Why do most companies have to conduct background checks on employees before formally hiring, while most MBA programs conduct background checks after accepting applicants for admission? (Oku Newku) Traditionally, large companies hire private companies to conduct background checks on applicants before they are hired. Many universities conduct similar background checks on applicants to professional master's programs. But unlike corporate background checks, college background checks are typically conducted after an applicant has been granted admission. Why don't business schools survey MBA students before deciding whether to admit them?

The process of recruiting students for professional master's programs is very different from the process of recruiting new employees in large enterprises. Those who want to enter professional master's programs will mostly apply to multiple schools at the same time, three or four schools with relatively high conditions, and schools with a relatively high admission probability, plus a few schools that are very sure. Therefore, most colleges know that the applicants they accept are likely to be accepted elsewhere. People looking for jobs in large companies may also apply to several organizations at the same time, but as the interview process unfolds step by step, they may only take a serious attitude towards preparing for one or two positions. Background checks are expensive.MBA programs that conduct such surveys generally do so only after they have established that admitted students will definitely attend the school (for example, they have received a deposit check from the students).

Most positions require employees to work a certain number of hours each week in exchange for a fixed weekly salary agreed in advance. In some roles, however, employees are not paid until they sell their services directly to the public. The following two examples illustrate the choices employees face in such positions.
