Chapter 139 Question one twenty six

Why are generally attractive people also smarter than others? (Kinze Tetsu, Jody Kova) Studies have shown that people who are perceived as physically attractive by others tend to be perceived as smarter too. Moreover, as we all know, well-behaved children mostly do better in school. While the usual explanation for the latter finding is teacher preference, an economic analysis of the informal market for marriage partners suggests that good-looking children may indeed be smarter. For example, evolutionary psychologists Satoshi Kanazawa and Jody.Jody Kovar provided convincing evidence for the following four propositions: (1) Smart people are more likely to obtain higher social status and higher income; (2) Men mostly regard attractive women as (3) women generally regard men with higher income and social status as more desirable marriage partners; (4) intelligence and physical attractiveness are important heritable traits.

If the first three propositions are true, then it can be logically deduced that women with relatively attractive appearance are mostly matched with relatively intelligent men.And if beauty and wisdom can be inherited, then the offspring of this combination are often above average in both aspects. In short, the coexistence of beauty and intelligence is not an unreasonable assumption, given what we know about the informal market for personal relationships.
