Recommended order 【World famous mountaineer】Chris.Bonington Chris Bonington/Text I first met Joe last winter in Chamonix. That's when Joe, like many mountaineers, decided he wanted to learn to ski, but instead of taking formal training courses, he would teach himself.I have heard and read stories of several desperate escapes during his mountaineering career, most notably the most recent one in Peru. But none of this impressed me. Sitting side by side with Joe in the bar in Chamonix, I couldn't connect those thrills and fame with him. He's dark-skinned, has slightly punk haircuts, and has a bit of a gruff demeanor.Let's just say I can picture myself meeting him on the streets of Sheffield, but it's hard to imagine this man in the mountains. After this meeting I seldom thought of Joe until I read the manuscript of The Ice Rift.It wasn't just the story that attracted me (it was brilliant, it was the most incredible escape I've ever read), but also his prose, which was undulating, delicate and dramatic, and vividly portrayed his relationship with the Companion Simon.Ye Ci was in a state of extreme fear and pain. From the time Joe broke his leg on the way down, to his painful struggle alone in the ice crevasse, to the time he finally crawled back to camp with his injured leg, I was so captivated that I couldn't put it down.

To understand the story better, I recalled my experience on Mount Eiger in 1977 and compared it to Joe's escape.Doug Scott broke his legs while rappelling from the summit, which was somewhat similar to Joe's early escape experience.Doug and I were the only ones around this utterly desolate summit at the time, but we had two other team members in the snow cave in the col below the summit. We got caught in a snowstorm and spent six days descending, five of them without food.On the way down I slipped and fell and broke a rib.It was the most traumatic experience of my mountaineering career, and it paled in comparison to Joe's adventures.

In 1957, a similar incident occurred on the Haramosh peak in the Karakoram Mountains. That was the first attempt by the Oxford University mountaineering team to climb the 7,490-meter peak. After the climbing team decided to turn back, two of them, Bernard Jillot and John Emery, planned to walk a little further along the ridge in order to take some photos, but suddenly encountered a large avalanche caused by strong winds.Fortunately, they saved their lives during the fall, and their teammates also successfully rescued them. But that was only the beginning of a long mountain disaster, in the end only two people survived.

That experience was equally fascinating and soul-stirring.However, the story is written by a professional writer, so the story lacks the sensibility and power of first-hand documentary. This is exactly Joe.Where the Simpsons excel. Not only is The Blindfolds the most incredible escape story I've ever heard, but it's also brilliantly told, alive and well, a classic of its kind. February 1988
