Chapter 20 Henry's story

His first stop in prison was Rikers Island in the East River, near the runway at LaGuardia Airport.The fact that he was only a few miles from home, painfully close, only reminded him that it was his own folly that kept him on this side of the wall. During Lex's prison sentence, Henry sees things he wishes he never saw.He saw inmates attack other inmates and torture them, wrapping blankets over the victims' heads so they couldn't see their perpetrators.One day, a man who had had an argument with Henry walked into the cell and punched Henry in the head.Two weeks later, the man tried to kill Henry with a sharpened fork.

During this period, Henry has been wanting to shout loudly that he is innocent, but what is the use of doing so?Everyone professes to be innocent.About a month later, Henry was sent to Amira Reformatory in upstate New York, a maximum-security prison.He ate little, slept little, and smoked cigarettes incessantly.One hot night, he woke up sweating profusely, got up to get a glass of cold water to drink.Then the drowsiness faded, and he saw the iron gate.He fell on the bed and began to cry. That night, Henry asked God why he didn't die as a baby.A flash of light caught his attention.His eyes fell on a Bible.As soon as he opened it, it happened to be the book of Job; on that page, Job cursed the day he was born.

That was the first time he felt that God was speaking to him. But he didn't listen.
