Night Circus 艾琳.莫根斯坦 1485Words 2023-02-05
The circus came quietly. It popped up overnight with no advance notice, no posters on the pillars and billboards in the city center, no mention or advertisement in the local newspaper. Those towering tents were all striped black and white, gold and scarlet were invisible.Except for the green trees and grass in the surrounding fields, there is no color at all.Black and white stripes are reflected in the gray sky; tents of countless shapes and sizes are surrounded by an exquisite wrought iron fence to form a colorless world.Even the little ground that can be seen from the outside is black and white, treated with paint, white powder or other circus techniques.

But it is not open, not yet. Within hours, everyone in town heard about it.By afternoon, word had spread through several nearby towns.Word of mouth is far more effective than printed letters and exclamation points on flyers or posters. The news of a mysterious circus suddenly appearing is too startling, too rare.People were amazed at the majestic size of several taller tents. They all stared at an indescribably strange clock sitting inside the entrance grille. And the black sign, painted in white lettering, hanging over the gate, read: open at night dawn closes What the hell is a circus that's only open at night?everyone asked. No one could figure out why, but when night fell, a large crowd of people gathered outside the entrance of the circus waiting to enter.

Of course, you are one of them. You are defeated by curiosity, and human curiosity is always invincible. You're standing in the fading light, with your scarf tightly wrapped around your neck to keep out the night's wind, waiting to see for yourself what a circus looks like when the sun goes down. The ticket booth visible from the entrance is blocked and closed. All the tents are quiet, only occasionally fluttering gently with the breeze. The only movement in the circus is the ticking clock, if that kind of grotesque sculpture can be called a clock. The scene was very lonely. But you feel, as well as the pleasant scent of autumn leaves, that you smell caramel on the evening air.A subtle sweet fragrance hidden in the depths of the cold wind.

The sun had sunk completely below the horizon, and what was left of the sky had turned from twilight to darkness. The crowd around you began to wait impatiently, a large group of restless squirming feet, murmuring whether to give up waiting and find a warmer place to spend the night. When it happened, you yourself were thinking about whether to leave. The first is a bang, which is almost inaudible mixed with wind and human voices, similar to the soft sound of a kettle boiling when making tea. Then came the light. Countless small flashes of light burst out from the tent, as if the entire circus was covered with a large group of bright fireflies. The waiting crowd watched the show of light and fell silent.Someone next to you gasps.A child applauds joyfully at the sight.

When the tents were all lit up, glowing in the night sky, the sign appeared too. More firefly-like points of light began to flicker across the top of the entrance grille, hidden between the wrought-iron scrollwork. They flashed and crackled, some with white light and smoke.People near the entrance retreated quickly. At first, it was just a group of irregular light spots. However, when more and more points of light are added, it can be found that they are arranged in the shape of handwritten letters.A C came first, followed by other letters.Strangely, there is a q, and several e's.When the last light sphere was lit up, the smoke and sparks dissipated, and the finely carved blazing sign finally emerged. You lean to the left to get a better view and notice that it reads:

Le Cirque des Reves Some in the crowd smiled knowingly, while others frowned, looking to the left and right in confusion.A child next to you is tugging at her mother by the sleeve, begging her to explain what that means. Dream Circus (Annotation: Le Cirque des Reves, French, namely The Circus of Dreams.).she answered. The girl smiled happily. Then the gate trembled violently and swung open, as if of its own volition. Two iron doors flew open with a clatter, inviting the crowd in. The circus is finally open. You can enter now.
