Chapter 12 12. Tooth extraction

Chapter One Jeff.Whenever Peters talks about the ethics of his industry, he is eloquent and eloquent. He said: As long as we disagree on the morality of the deceitful enterprise, Andy.A rift appeared in Tucker's friendly relationship.Andy has his standards and I have mine.I don't quite agree with Andy's extortion from the public, but he thinks my conscience is too much in the way of the economic interests of our joint venture.Sometimes, we argue red-faced.Another time, when everyone was arguing more and more fiercely, he even compared me with Rockefeller [Note]. I know what you mean, Andy, I said, but I'm not mad at you for insulting me after we've been friends for so many years. After you calm down, you will regret it yourself.I have yet to meet the court service officer.

[Note] American oil magnate Rockefeller was often accused and summoned by the court due to illegal economic activities; however, he escaped punishment many times by offering bribes. One summer, Andy and I decided to take a break in a small town in Kentucky called Green Grass Valley, a beautiful town surrounded by mountains. We called ourselves horse dealers, kind and decent, and were there to cool off the heat. The people of Green Grass Valley liked us enough that Andy and I decided not to take any hostile action, neither handing out plans for a rubber plantation there nor selling Brazilian diamonds.

One day the big hardware dealer from Green Grass Valley came to the hotel where Andy and I were staying and politely joined us for a smoke on the side porch. We played ring toss together in the county yard some afternoons and got to know him pretty well.He was a talkative, rosy-cheeked, short-breathing man who was at the same time remarkably fat and respectable. After we had talked about the events of the day, the Murkison, his honour, carefully and nonchalantly drew a letter from his pocket and showed it to us. Uh, what do you guys think? He smiled and said, actually sent such a letter to me!

Andy and I knew what it was; but we pretended to read it.It's an out-of-fashion typed letter that sells counterfeit bills that tell you how to spend a thousand dollars and get five thousand bills that experts can't tell the difference between; One of the employees stole the original and reprinted it. What a joke they should send me such a letter!Murkison said again. Many good people have received such letters.Andy says if you ignore the first letter, they'll forget it.If you answer the letter, they will write again, asking you to bring money to make a deal. Didn't expect them to send me a letter!Murkison said.

Chapter two A few days later, he came again. Friends, he said, I know you are well-behaved people, otherwise I wouldn't tell you.I sent a letter back to those hooligans, just kidding. They wrote again, asking me to go to Chicago. They asked me to give Jay a hand before leaving.Smith sent a telegram. When I got there, I was asked to wait on a certain street corner, and a man in gray clothes would come over and drop a newspaper in front of me.Then I could ask him: How is the oil and water, so we tacitly agreed with each other, and we connected. Ah, that's right, said Andy with a yawn, the same old trick.I often see it in newspapers. Then he takes you to a snare room in a hotel where a Mr. Jones is already waiting. They take out lots of real new bills and sell you five for one, as much as you want. You see them put the money in a little bag for you and think it's in there. But when you go out and look again, there are only some kraft papers inside.

Oh, it won't work if they try to play tricks in front of me.Murkison said, if I am not smart, how can I start the most promising business in Green Grass Valley? Are you saying they showed you real bills, Mr. Tucker? I never use it myself, but I always use it when I read it in the newspaper.Andy replied. Friends, added Murkison, I'm sure those guys can't fool me.I'm going to take two thousand dollars and go there to play tricks on them.if i billMurkison saw them take out the bill and I just kept staring at it.Since they said it was five yuan for one yuan, I insisted on it, and they would never go back on their word.Bill.Murkison is such a businessman.Yeah, I do plan to go to Chicago and try Jay.Smith's five-for-one trick.I think oil and water are good enough.

Andy and I tried to get that windfall idea out of Murkison's head, but to no avail, as if trying to persuade a gambler to stop betting on the outcome of Brian's election. No, sir; he must do a good for the public, and let the money-swindlers shoot themselves in the foot. That might teach them a lesson. After Murkison left, Andy and I sat for a while, thinking silently about rational heresy. When we are idle, we always like to raise our own standards by thinking and reasoning. After a long time, Jeff, Andy said, I rarely disagree with you when you talk to me about the integrity of your business.I can often be wrong. But on this matter, I don't think we have any differences.I don't think we should let Mr. Murkison go to Chicago alone to find the man who sold the counterfeit money. That can only have one result.Let's find a way to intervene to avoid accidents.Do you think it makes us feel better?

I stood up and shook Tucker's hand vigorously for a long time. Andy, I said, I used to think that you were merciless in your actions, and I was always a little bit disapproving. Now I was wrong. In the end, you can't judge by appearance, after all, you have a good heart.I really admire it.What you said was exactly what I was thinking. If we let Murkison carry out his plans, I say, we would be disgraced and unadmirable. If he is determined to go, then let us go with him and prevent the deception from succeeding. Andy agrees with me; I'm glad he's hell-bent on busting the fake-note scam.

I do not consider myself a pious man, I say, nor do I consider myself a moral fanatic; but when I see a man who has broken his hands, struggled, and built a business in difficulty, be subjected to a public nuisance I decided I couldn't stand by while the deceptions of outlaw crooks. Yes, Jeff.Andy said that if Murkison insisted on going, we'd follow him and prevent this absurdity.Like you, this kind of monetary loss is the last thing I want anyone else to suffer. After all, we went to find Murkison. No, friends, he said, I can't let this Chicago's murderous singing sound go off my ears.If I don't do it, I won't stop, I must squeeze a little oil out of this ghost trick.I am so glad to have you all going with me.While that five-for-one deal cashes out, you might be able to help.Very well, you two would like to go together, and nothing could be better, I really regard it as a diversion.

[Note] The Harmful Song of Chicago: Original Siren, translated as Sailian, commonly known as Sailian Banshee, is a half-human, half-bird sea monster in Greek mythology. It often lures passing crew members with beautiful songs and makes them wander The island couldn't bear to leave, and died of starvation. Mr. Murkison had word in Green Grass that he was going to go out with Mr. Peters and Mr. Tucker to explore the iron mines in West Virginia. He gave Jay.Smith sent a telegram announcing his intention to set off some day to receive instruction; and thereupon the three of us set off for Chicago.

On the way, Murkison entertained himself with speculations and made many pleasant memories in advance. A man in gray, he said, was waiting on the southwest corner of Walbash Avenue and Lake Street. He dropped the newspaper, and I asked how the oil and water were.Ha ha ha ha!Then he held his belly and laughed for five minutes. Sometimes, when Murkison got serious, he didn't know what he was up to, and tried to dispel it with nonsense. Friends, he said, even if you give me 10,000 yuan, I don't want this to be publicized in Green Grass Valley.Otherwise I will be ruined.I know you two are gentlemen.I think it is the duty of every citizen to punish those thieves in society.I want to show them whether oil and water are good or not.Five yuan for one piece, that's Jay.Smith himself proposed, he and Bill. When Murkison does business, he has to keep his promise. third chapter We arrived in Chicago around seven in the afternoon.Murkison agreed to meet the man in gray at half past nine.We had dinner at the hotel and went upstairs to Murkison's room to wait. Friends, said Murkison, let's figure it out together and figure out a way to defeat the opponent. For example, when I was chatting with that gray crook, you two just happened to barge in and say, "Hey, Merkey!Shake my hand with the look of an old acquaintance in a foreign land.I called the liar aside and told him you were Jenkins and Brown, the grocers from Green Grass Valley, nice folks, maybe willing to take a risk out of town. Of course he would say: If they are willing to invest, bring them here, what do you two think of this approach? What do you think, Jeff?Andy looked at me and said. Oh, I might as well give you my opinion.I said, I said let's get over it on the spot.Don't waste any more time.I took a nickel-plated 38-caliber revolver out of my pocket and turned the barrel a few turns. You dishonest, sinful, sinister fat pig, I said to Murkison, take out the two thousand dollars obediently, and put it on the table.Do it quickly, or I'll be rude to you.I am a peaceful person by nature, but sometimes I go to extremes. With people like you, I'll go on after he's got his money out, courts and prisons are necessary. You're here to take money from those people.Do you think you have an excuse if they want to peel you off?No, sir; you're just trading violence for violence. You're actually ten times worse than the guy who sold the fake bills.I said, you go to church and serve like a decent citizen back home, but you come to Chicago and try to rob people of their money, and those people make deals with the kind of scumbags you want to be today to create insurance favorable industry.Do you know that the person who sells the counterfeit banknotes is also old and young, and he depends on him to support his family. It is your hypocritical citizens who want to get something for nothing that fuels lotteries, short mines, stock trading and speculation in this country.Without you, they would have nothing to do.The counterfeit money seller you're trying to rob probably spent years studying that trade.Every time he makes a deal, he takes a risk of losing his freedom, money, and even his life. You're here under the guise of sacrosanct, with a decent cover and a great mailing address to scam him out of his money. If he gets your money, you can report it to the police. If you got his money, he'd have to keep quiet and pawn his gray suit for supper.Mr. Tucker and I see through you, so we're here to teach you the lesson you deserve.Pass me the money, you grass-fed hypocrite. I put the two thousand dollars in twenty-yuan bills into my underwear pocket. Now you take out your watch.I said to Murkison, no, I don't want to show.Put it on the table, you sit in that chair, and it's an hour before you leave. If you yell, or leave in less than an hour, we'll post you all over Green Grass Valley.I think your reputation and status there are worth more than two thousand dollars to you. So Andy and I left him. On the train, Andy didn't speak for a long time. Finally he said: Jeff, can I ask you a word? It doesn't matter if you ask two questions, I said, you can ask forty sentences. When we set off with Murkison he said, do you have that in mind? Well, isn't it.I replied, what else could be done?Don't you also have that plan? It took about half an hour before Andy spoke.I think Andy sometimes doesn't fully understand my ethical and moral system of thought. Jeff, he said, I would like you to draw a diagram of your conscience and annotate it when you have time.Sometimes I want to refer to references.
