在這些刺激之下，我突然覺得，是做人工智能的時機了！至少應該把人工智能的平台先建妥。既然全世界都恨不得中國永遠做一個次殖民地，連有些中國人也以身為洋奴為榮，我為什麼不用實力來証明，只憑老祖先的智慧，中國人就可以雄踞世界舞台！ 我立刻召集員工，宣佈了我的工作計劃。這時共有員工三十位，其中能寫程式的還不到二十人。我按照各人的發展潛力，分為兩組。一組從事自然語言的開發，一組則做外圍的應用軟體，最後綜合成為一個能用中文控制的應用系統。 等這一套應用系統完成，大概需要三年。到那時，人員的訓練完成了，我們的實力也具足了，我不再需要外力的支助，便可以找個遠遠的山岰子，躲起來做人工智能！ 微電腦自七十年代發展迄今，尚不足二十個年頭。但是在這些年間，舉世各國所投入的人力、智力與物力的總和，遠遠超過其他任何學術及技術。 儘管如此，今天的電腦仍然是一種尚不成熟、卻具有無比潛力的事務機器。尤其是在商業導向的策略下，這種現象完全操之於少數技術人員及經營者手上，由他們決定該做什麼和該怎樣做。硬體有各種不同的規格，軟體更是五花八門千變萬化，使用者必須經過專業的訓練才能略窺堂奧，形成了非常特殊的賣方市場。 其實除了硬體生產受限於材料及技術，尚有待逐步改進外，電腦的適用範疇以及發展方向已經相當明確，應能設計出一種完善而統一的軟體。只是在商業掛帥的前提下，主宰市場的賣方還有大利可圖，不願輕易放手這塊肥肉而已。 我的構想是在現今的硬體設備上，結合已知的各種應用觀念，設計一種功能相通、效力強大的應用軟體，不僅令使用者易於掌握，且能供程式師繼續發展。最後再略加調整，就可以成為人工智能的基本系統程式！ 這就是整合系統，在整合系統下，不再需要一個一個單獨的套裝軟體，取而代之是一般應用的整合程式以及軟體公司所發展的一些特殊功能。使用者只需陳述工作的要求或調用各種工作流程，就能達到目的。 因此，當整合系統完成後，軟體工程師最後的挑戰，將是符合使用者習慣的自然語言以及具有學習、分析、判斷功能的人工智能。 下面是我整體規劃的原則和方向（對電腦沒有興趣的讀者，請自行略過），像這樣龐大的系統，當然不是少數人的力量所能勝任。但是我不顧一切，有多少力量就做多少。 一、規劃： 良好的規劃是整合系統的成敗關鍵，由於無人能夠預知未來，所以不可能有絕對正確且永遠不變的規劃方式。但這並不表示良好的規劃不可能，相反地，只要考慮到目前的需要、可見未來的發展以及進一步的擴充，將之有組織有系統的明確規定下來，這種規劃就能行之久遠。 規劃的前提是符合人的利益，因為不論未來的發展如何，電腦永遠不能脫離人的掌握。至少在一個設計者的立場，作為人類的一份子，這種職業道德是必須遵守的。 因此，首先要考慮應用的便利，在目前鍵盤輸入不可或缺的當兒，鍵盤就是所謂的人機界面。所以良好的規劃就是：鍵盤的定義要明確，功能要齊全，使用要統一，操作要合理、擴充要簡單。 二、文字： 文字是人對符號所賦與的概念，電腦可處理符號及文字，符號是直覺的，不論國籍、人種都能共同應用，唯有文字需要經過學習始能認知。由於不同的文字的存在是一客觀事實，整合系統必須對之有全盤的考慮。 對中文系統而言，目前為了兼容中、英文，電腦的資料必須使用ASCII 碼。而ASCII 碼並不適合中文處理，但要想採用其標準就必須接受其限制，於是迫不得已地產生了中文特有的內碼。 本整合系統採用雙軌制，普及版兼容中、英文，採用兩萬四千字的二字元內碼，全文版則放棄ASCII 改用四字元的萬國碼。如此則可同時使用所有的拚音及圖形文字，至於中文，採用第五代倉頡輸入法，計有六百萬個可能組合之字形。不僅兼容了過去歷史上所用之文字，且能滿足當前的人名地名需要以及千秋萬世各種新事物、新觀念的實際應用。既承先且啟後，可說是一勞永逸，徹底將中文的應用問題解決，給中國文字帶來無限的活力及生機。 三、程式： 必須採用獨特的組合語言程式技術，用極小的空間，最快的速度，以低檔的微電腦，達到效率最高的功能。雖然硬體技術不斷地進步，但整合程式的基本精神就在於利用高效率的軟體以增進硬體的功能，而不是依賴硬體的改進。 此外，整合程式是累積性的，無盡延伸的，浪費空間時間的程式一時或許有其存在的價值，但卻會產生長遠的、不利的影響。 市面上軟體的項目雖然多如牛毛，一般通用的不過七大類，分別是：文書處理，繪圖處理，表格處理，資料庫，網絡通訊，排版印刷，視窗應用等，這些都是整合系統的基本功能。 四、設計方法： 以目前的微電腦容量來看，僅僅運行前述的軟體之一，就幾乎佔據了所有的空間，以致於一般設計師咸認為實現的可能性不大。 其次，各種應用功能有別，每個設計師也有不同的風格，在如此複雜而龐大的工程中，很難規劃出統一的理念，故人皆視為畏途。 不論什麼軟體，其運作不外乎檔案調用，螢幕處理，資料安排以及列印傳輸等。在理論上，除了性質特殊的若干套件外，一般說來，每個軟體之間約有百分之六十，甚至更大的比例，重複著相同的工作。 在整合之後，重複的程式可以共同使用，故軟體所佔用的系統空間絕對小於原有各種套件的總合。 此外，以市場為主導的美國，人工昂貴，為了經濟上的效益，一般程式的製作概以高階語言為工具，其空間較組合語言大三倍以上。如採用組合語言，則製作時間較長，設計成本增加，對美國市場來說，是不可思議的作法。在中國就沒有這種顧慮，人多、工資低廉，最適於這種精雕細琢的工作。同時，由於中國落後太多，又缺乏硬體零件的生產基礎，要想迎頭趕上，唯有利用我們的人力及智力資源。 此外，市面上各種應用軟體都有其獨特的風格與價值，要想成功地將所有功能溶合成一體，必須採用非常的手段。先要徹底吸取現有各軟體的觀念，再重新規劃，用統一的應用方式，從頭做起。這種做法需要動員龐大的人力，廣泛的知識、週密的規劃與精確的控制。這對一向標榜個人風格、崇尚自由的美國工程師來說，顯然是不可行。 更重要的是設計的基本理念，由於英文字母不多，初期之電腦軟體僅提供一種文字狀態，或者專供培基語言使用的簡單圖形功能。直到蘋果機及表格處理軟體問世後，才有了所謂的圖形狀態。現在為了滿足整合程式的需要，尤其是視窗、排版及繪圖更完全建立在圖形狀態上。英文原有的應用觀念改變了，然其設計理念尚有待建立。 中文則不然，一開始就建立在圖形態上，為了中文字庫的特殊需要所發展出的字形產生器的技術，能充分利用圖形功能，大量濃縮貯存空間。因此，一旦進入整合程式的領域，過去所積累的寶貴經驗，正是當前最有價值的圖形技術。 不論什麼學問或技術，在尚未成熟之初，早期的發展都必然會成為後期的包袱，現有的各種軟體亦不例外。如何能在既有的、已經相當成功的應用方式下，再兼容其他軟體的功能呢？這也是美國人整合軟體的大問題。還有一個因素，是電腦界也面臨工業後期分工過細的症候，系統程式師不寫應用程式，應用程式師又不懂系統結構。 唯一可行的方式，是揚棄過去的成就及觀念，一切重頭開始。顯然，這對一些已經佔有市場，具備一定實力者很難做到。相反地，若能夠虛心學習，願意由零出發者，方能綜合各家之大成，達到真正的整合目的。 圖形可以涵蓋文字狀態，整合觀念必然建立在圖形狀態之上。在圖形的立場，顯示及列印的效果，與記憶只是對應的關係，可由資料指令處理。至於圖形態的畫面是以點為基本單位，使用者一旦定義了範圍，其內容性質、大小及形狀，皆以點為基準。 於是，在使用者的定義下，每一組定義之範圍，即相當於一個視覺的操作區域，我們不妨稱之為視窗。視窗既然可以任由使用者定義，視窗之內可以容納視窗，視窗之上也可以重疊視窗，只要系統的記憶空間足，視窗就可以無限延伸。 這樣一來，在視窗限定下的一個操作空間中，對應著某一記憶區的資料。文字、繪圖甚至於表格、資料庫等，皆得以同時安排在各個視窗中。因此，無限視窗就成為整合程式的基本環境，任使用者自由運用。 根據上述的理念，我用了很多策略、方法，由寫程式起到模組分割，一一教導。每個工程師的程式都有嚴格的規定，而且程式寫作的方法相同，緩衝器的用法一致。所以在程式中不需加上任何註解，大家都能一目瞭然。這樣不僅節省了寫作的時間，程式師也能自由地發揮。我又要求每段程式寫完以後，要貼在佈告欄上，讓大家當作文章一樣欣賞。 這一來，誰也不能偷巧，而且形成一種無形的競爭壓力。每當程式空間到達某一極限時，我就召集大家研討，把沒有必要的垃圾清除，把功能相近的程式合併。程式師在彼此觀摩學習之下，一個個進步神速，士氣高漲！ 陳金耀知道我的計劃後大為興奮，特別去查資料、翻書，找到聚珍這個名稱，說是乾隆時期欽定的、世界第一套木活字版。 對自然語言小組，我的要求更高，不僅觀念技術要好，品德操守更是一絲也不能疏忽。更重要的是任務分派，平常上課時所講的只是些基本理論，現在進入實際製作，為了整體的安全考量，各種介面技術只允許參與工作者知道。 我挑選了一個六人的智能小組，先徵求他們的同意。在五年的工作期間內，小組成員暫時不能考慮結婚，大家都沒有意見。 辦公室也重新分配，智能小組的成員與我同在一間辦公室，以便隨時討論。此外我又準備了一些課題，每個星期撥出三個小時與他們共同研討，交換心得。 然而，幾個月下來，我完全無法想像與理解。他們不像是沒有興趣，又不像是不懂，只是每次的聚會都是我一個人在喃喃自語。我想盡了辦法，換了幾次題目，由觀念層次到技術製作，甚至採用討論科幻小說的形式，大家還是不能投入。不得已，改組了好幾次，人都換過了，就是聽不到他們的聲音！我一個個地問，他們的看法也不離譜，所缺乏的就是那麼一點興奮的熱情！ 我找他們來討論的目的之一，是怕自己信心太過，很希望有一點客觀的回饋。我不怕別人反對，有反對的聲音，我才有重新思考的機會。我怕的是在這麼龐大的系統中，沒有人能幫我動腦筋，等錯到不可收拾了，再想回頭就難了！ 最後，我把唯一的指望集中在小王身上，希望激起她的興趣。偏偏她的問題也最多，她有足夠的才智，但是限於教育環境、經驗背景與發展機會。她不但缺乏自信，並且對人性有著深厚的疑慮。我苦口婆心地勸導她，盡心設法感動她，反而因此導致了更多的誤會，以及因彌補誤會而產生的錯誤抉擇。 除了小王外，還有一個叫毛紅松的，我也曾寄以厚望。他是浙江大學光學研究所畢業的，學的是光學。有次他上課遲到，晚了兩分鐘，我不許他進來，他竟然坐在門後聽了兩個小時，從此我對他刮目相看。小毛的觀念很清晰，但技術很生疏。尤其他有個嚴重的缺點，經常會把簡單的事情看得複雜無比，以致於不能當機立斷。他和小王正是兩種典型，教學上顧東就不能顧西，以致於我在工作的規劃上一直延宕難決。
